Drawing Groups - 8 week term and ongoing Held in person at Catherine's Castlemaine studio
Join Catherine Pilgrim for tutored Drawing Groups aimed at beginners and intermediate draughts-people looking to improve their skills in observational drawing. Work with Catherine and a small group of fellow students on exercises to improve ‘seeing’, while also reinforcing fundamentals such as gesture, tone and proportion. Working from Catherine’s light filled studio, we will work towards inspiring you to take your drawing further.
These highly successful and popular sessions have been running since 2014. Catherine Pilgrim learnt to draw in Australia and Washington DC and has been exhibiting for almost thirty years. Her work can be found in Public and Corporate Collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Geelong Regional Gallery and the Australian War Memorial. Catherine’s approach is skill based while also aligned with the inclusive philosophy of the Campaign for Drawing, who promote drawing to learn, rather than learning to draw. Catherine’s Masters of Fine Art research (Monash University) was based around the subjective process of making a representational drawing. Catherine has also completed a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Covid Safety (keeping this going for all our good health) We have set the studio up with your good health in mind. There will be a maximum of five participants in the group. During warm (not windy) weather we can open the large doors for excellent ventilation. The studio has an air purifier. Please wear a mask if you have respiratory symptoms although at time of writing we are rarely needing them - hand sanitiser available. Please don't come into the studio if you have Covid. We can Zoom you in.
(Please Note - In case of illness we can run the sessions via Zoom if necessary. I do my best to ensure you have the best possible online experience - although we have hardly used this option in 2024. Please discuss this with me if you have any concerns.)
Cancellation Policy
Should you need to cancel more than two weeks before the start date I will refund your deposit If you need to cancel less than two weeks before the start date I will refund your deposit if I have someone to fill the spot (there is usually a waiting list). Unfortunately I am unable to refund after the start date. If I need to cancel the term prior to the start date I will refund fully. Unfortunately I am unable to provide make up sessions during the initial term of the programme. Make up sessions sometimes work with later terms although will be dependent on availability of space.
I’ve done three terms of drawing classes plus a weekend intensive with Catherine - she is a fabulous teacher. She has a focus on technique and confidence but in a way where you just keep ‘putting lines on the paper’ and before you even realise it, you’ve developed more skills and talent. I never thought I could draw; I hadn’t even tried for 20 years. But Looking back over my progress with Catherine I can see that I just needed the right teacher to unlock my willingness to give it a go and guide my hand and sight. Her classes are also FUN and there is always the most delicious cake. Can’t recommend highly enough - Alyssa June 2022 (and back in 2024)
Thank you so much for the past year and the opportunities you have been able to provide for me! Ive had the best time drawing with you! Gabby Westerling December 22
Catherine's classes have enabled me to reconnect with the process of drawing. The classes are inspiring with their focus on observation, technique and individual interpretation. Catherine's skill, not only in her own work, but in bringing out the best in her students and encouraging discussion, results in a very stimulating learning environment. Sally
As a 'graduate' of five terms' worth of classes, I'd highly recommend Catherine as a tutor. She also does a mean cake. And for the literal-minded, by 'mean', I mean 'delicious'. Jo
As a number cruncher then farmer who has decided she wants to draw, your class was informative and most encouraging. Cannot really suggest anything that would improve the class... I came away more enlightened and more confident. Lesley
I always thought I was a detail person but your classes instilled new observation skills and highlighted the importance of accuracy and spending time getting the drawing right. Pam
